MOBILITY HUB
Piazza Dei Cinquecento
A welcoming gateway worthy of the majesty of the city of Rome
WEST 8 Design and AMAART architects have developed the new face of Piazza dei Cinquecento. To create a contemporary vision with the aim of giving back to inhabitants and travelers a unitary and efficient public space. A vision that highlights the impressive historical pre-existence, becoming a welcoming gateway worthy of the majesty of the city of Rome. Our concept is based on the interlocking and equal coexistence of nature and urban space.

Civic life and nature
A square designed to host large events, demonstrations. A place of civic life in contact with nature through a lovely wooded garden and the carré dei pini.
Mobility Hub
One of the major objectives of the Piazza dei Cinquecento competition is the transformation of the railway station Termini into an efficient mobility hub. Through a reconfiguration of mobility, the square is therefore reorganized as a single and recognizable space, freed from all the physical and visual obstacles that characterize its current fragmentation.

Urban regeneration
A project that aims to redevelop the entire area of the Roma Termini station and Piazza dei 500. A modern vision with the aim of giving back to inhabitants and travelers a unitary and efficient public space. A public space that highlights the impressive historical pre-existence, becoming a welcoming gateway worthy of the majesty of the city of Rome.

Atrio
The external concourse of the station extends in spatial and semantic continuity with the internal one, until it reaches the transversal axis of Via Cavour. Its pedestrian surface, free of obstacles and protected by a strip of flower beds, welcomes the flow of travelers and allows them to orient themselves. The Mura Serviane flank the space, finally visible. Next to them is the Nuova Lampada Osram, located at the end of the visual axis from Piazza della Repubblica, which re-proposes itself in the role of the one that until the 1980s represented the focal element and meeting point in the square. On the opposite side, to the south, two rows of Taxi extend towards via Giolitti, relocated laterally with respect to today’s frontal and occlusive position.
Carré dei Pini
The carré dei pini characterizes the main pedestrian area of the square, which extends to include the Palazzo Massimo, giving it a new leading role. The shape of the Carré draws inspiration from Michelangelo’s cloister in the nearby Certosa di Santa Maria degli Angeli, part of the Diocletian Baths complex. The flat surface, shaded by the crowns of pine trees, is lowered by two steps to create a welcoming space. Its travertine edges thus become usable by visitors, leaving a flexible space in the center, suitable for hosting temporary events. The tall pine trunks pay homage to and frame the facade of the station which is their background.
